History, traditions, and use of one of the oldest tools of prayer (in Italian)
A 3-part journey to explore the mala from a broad, deep, and respectful perspective, honoring its origins.
We often think of the mala as a single object, connected only to Buddhist or Hindu traditions, always made in the same way and meant to be used in only one way.
How many times have I heard:
“A mala can only have 108 beads,” or:
“A REAL mala is made like this.”
In reality, the world of malas (and prayer beads more broadly) is far richer, more diverse, and more surprising.
Through this journey, we will explore the history, traditions, and uses of the mala, widening our view beyond the most familiar boundaries to discover the deep roots of spiritual practice with prayer beads across different cultures of the world.
We will explore the history of the mala and, more broadly, of prayer beads, along with their different forms, materials, structures, and the meanings they have taken on in different traditions.
We will also look at how to use a mala in personal practice according to tradition, and how to approach this tool today in a way that is conscious, authentic, and culturally respectful—honoring where it comes from while also finding a living, contemporary way to integrate it into our own reality.
We will also talk about the relationship between repetition, attention, prayer, meditation, and well-being, exploring the connection between regular practice, attention, inner regulation, and well-being on the mental, physical, and inner levels.
This journey is for those who:
- want to know the mala in a deeper and more respectful way
- already use a mala, but want to better understand its history, structure, and tradition
- are interested in meditation, prayer, or contemplative practices
- want to expand their perspective beyond only Buddhist and Hindu malas
By the end of the journey, you will have a broader and more conscious understanding of the mala, its origins, its many forms around the world, and its use in personal practice.
If you want to discover how “The Mala Path” can truly open new perspectives—not only on the mala—I look forward to welcoming you.
