About Malas
✦ What is a mala, and how is it used?
A mala is a string of beads traditionally used in meditation, prayer, or mantra repetition. Each bead represents a breath or a recitation, helping you stay focused and present. You can also wear it as a reminder of your personal intention. Learn more on this page.
✦ Why are there 108 beads?
The number 108 has deep spiritual significance in many traditions. It represents completeness, the connection between the inner and outer world, and the cycle of life. All full-length malas from Samdea include 108 beads, unless stated otherwise.

✦ How is a traditional mala made?
A traditional mala is made with 108 beads, each measuring about 0.315 inches (8 mm) in diameter, plus a Guru Bead—the larger bead that marks the beginning and end of the meditation cycle.
The total length is approximately 44 inches (110 cm), plus the pendant.
This format is ideal for seated meditation: the size and weight of the beads create a sense of grounding and presence in your hands.
Many practitioners appreciate this more spacious design, especially when the mala is used as a ritual object during prayer or deep spiritual practice.
If this is your first mala, it’s a meaningful and beautiful way to begin your journey—anchored in intention, mindfulness, and tradition.

✦ What is a mini mala?
This mala is made with 108 beads, each measuring about 0.236 inches (6 mm) in diameter. The total length is approximately 32 inches (80 cm), plus the pendant. Because the beads are slightly smaller, the mala feels lighter and more comfortable, making it ideal for everyday use. It’s easy to wear around your neck, wrap around your wrist, or simply carry with you throughout the day—always close to your heart and your intention. See the collection.
✦ What is a short mala?
A short mala has fewer beads than the traditional full mala but still respects the sacred rule of using multiples of 9—such as 27, 54, or 81 beads. This number has deep symbolic meaning in many spiritual traditions.
For example, a short mala with 81 beads (each about 0.315 inches / 8 mm in diameter) measures approximately 32 inches (80 cm) in length, plus the pendant.
Short malas are perfect for those who want a lighter, more practical version to wear comfortably every day. They’re ideal for shorter meditations, moments of mindfulness, or carrying your intention with you on the go. See the collection.

✦ What is a half mala?
A half mala is a shorter version of the traditional mala, made with 54 beads—exactly half of the classic 108, still in harmony with the sacred number 9, which symbolizes spiritual balance and inner clarity.
All Samdea half malas are adjustable and beautifully versatile:
they can be worn both as necklaces (they measure approximately 54 cm) and as bracelets wrapped three times around the left wrist, in keeping with tradition.
Wearing your mala on the left side is believed to enhance your connection with the heart and intuition.
A half mala is perfect if you’re looking for something lighter and easier to wear every day, without giving up the depth and energy of a sacred object created with intention. See the collection.
✦ Can I personalize my mala?
Absolutely. Personalization is at the heart of Samdea. I work with you to choose stones, colors, and symbols that align with your intention or mantra. Together, we create a companion for your inner journey. Custom Mala.
✦ Are all malas handmade?
Yes, each mala is made by hand, bead by bead, in California. It’s a slow and mindful process where every knot is tied with intention.
✦ What are the malas made of?
Every mala is crafted with high-quality natural and undyed semi-precious gemstones, durable thread, and symbolic pendants or guru beads (like the Buddha or Life Seed). I choose each component carefully, honoring both the aesthetic and energetic qualities.
✦ Are the materials ethically sourced?
Whenever possible, I select stones and materials from trusted suppliers who prioritize ethical practices. I also personally source some beads during my travels, especially in Italy and the US.

✦ Do you use real gemstones?
Yes. I only use natural semi-precious stones, carefully selected for their energy, color, and quality. Every mala is a unique piece, handmade with care.
