King Boliuli Mala – Hematoid Quartz, Sand Jasper & Soapberry Seeds

Why I created this mala

I made this one-of-a-kind mala around a color palette I don't use often: rust, ochre, warm gold, smoky red. Hematoid quartz and sand jasper carry an earthy, mineral warmth that felt like it needed its own piece rather than being folded into something else. If you're drawn to pieces with visible texture and a bit of history behind them, this is the kind of mala that rewards a closer look — no two beads are quite alike.

The stones and the story of King Boliuli

Hematoid quartz is natural quartz containing hematite or other iron-rich inclusions, which is what gives it those red, rust, ochre, and gold tones running through an otherwise smoky, translucent stone. Every bead holds a slightly different pattern — clouds, threads, small mineral deposits caught inside the quartz as it formed.

The sand jasper beads bring a softer, earth-toned counterpoint, with patterns that recall stone, soil, and sediment shaped by time.

Two natural soapberry seeds sit within the mala as a reference to the Buddhist Soapberry Seed Sutra. According to the sutra, King Boliuli ruled a small kingdom weighed down by conflict, disease, and hardship, and felt too burdened by his duties to take on the Buddha's full teachings. He asked instead for something simpler — a practice he could carry with him without setting aside his responsibilities.

The Buddha's answer was to string together 108 soapberry seeds and move one at a time while repeating the names of the Three Jewels — Buddha, Dharma, Sangha — while walking, sitting, or lying down. The beads gave his hands a way to hold the count while his mind kept returning to the recitation. King Boliuli received the teaching gladly and had a thousand strands made for his family and his people, continuing the practice even while attending to matters of state.

What the story holds onto is that prayer beads were never framed as an escape from responsibility — they became a way of keeping a thread of practice running through an ordinary, demanding life. The two soapberry seeds on this mala are a quiet nod to that story: not a promise of anything, just a small material link to it.

Sterling silver details run through the piece, giving the warm stone tones a cooler, more defined edge.

The stones here are genuine, untreated gemstones — not dyed, not heat-treated to alter their color. The mala is hand-knotted on a resistant cord built to hold up under daily wear, and the sterling silver findings are nickel- and lead-free, so they're gentle on sensitive skin.

Natural stones and seeds are never perfectly uniform, and small variations in color, transparency, and pattern are part of what makes this piece genuinely one of a kind.
