A "guru mala" is a specific type of mala, which is a necklace of beads or stones traditionally used in meditation practice and mantra recitation. The distinguishing feature of the guru mala is the presence of a guru bead—a larger or differently shaped bead placed at the center of the necklace, followed by a tassel or a series of smaller beads.
The guru bead represents the spiritual teacher or inner guide in meditation practice. When reciting a mantra or moving through the mala with the fingers during meditation, the guru bead serves as a point of reference. Traditionally, one avoids crossing over the guru bead during continuous recitation of the mala. Upon reaching the guru bead, one may choose to reverse direction or pause, as it symbolically represents acknowledgment and respect for one’s spiritual teacher or inner guide.
