Herkimer Diamond, Black Tourmaline & Job’s Tears Mala Necklace

Why I created this mala

There is a lot to say about this one. I made it around a Herkimer diamond quartz I was lucky enough to find at an accessible price — a stone with real clarity and brilliance, paired with the deep black of tourmaline and a Job's tears seed at the meru. It's a mala built on contrast: mineral and plant, light and darkness, transparency and grounding. If you're drawn to pieces that hold a story as much as a look, this is one to sit with.

The stones, the seed, and their story

Despite its name, a Herkimer diamond is not a diamond — it's a naturally double-terminated quartz crystal, known for its clarity, brilliance, and the distinctive pointed formation at both ends. It takes its name from Herkimer County in New York State, where especially transparent specimens became well known. Inclusions, small internal fractures, and variations in luminosity aren't flaws; they're part of the crystal's natural structure.

The Herkimer quartz is paired with black tourmaline, a stone traditionally associated with protection.

The meru is made from a Job's tears seed, the natural seed of the plant Coix lacryma-jobi. These hard, naturally stringable seeds have been used across different cultures to make rosaries, prayer beads, and devotional objects. In Japan the plant is known as juzudama, connected to the juzu, the Japanese Buddhist rosary — before gemstone malas were widely available, seeds were one of the most direct ways to turn a natural plant material into a tool for counting, repetition, and prayer. In that sense, the Job's tears seed can be symbolically compared to the rudrākṣa: different botanical material, different tradition, but the same underlying idea — a natural seed becomes a tactile companion to practice, helping the hand count and the mind return.

The Western name comes from the seed's teardrop shape and its botanical name, lacryma-jobi, and evokes Job as a figure of suffering and perseverance. In the Bible, Job is a righteous man struck by a series of tragedies — he loses his children, his possessions, his security, his health — and cannot understand why, since he recognizes no fault in himself that would justify such suffering. He grieves, protests, questions, and rejects the simple explanations his friends offer. What makes the story hold up, though, isn't silent endurance: Job stays in dialogue. He moves through the pain, voices his anger and despair, asks hard questions, and never abandons the search for meaning. That's why his symbolism felt right for this mala — not suffering as an end point, but the refusal to stop engaging with life, even without answers. Placed at the meru, the seed marks arrival and return: the point where one round closes, the direction reverses, and the practice begins again.

The pendant is a heart in pyrite. The shape recalls what stays alive despite hardship — what keeps feeling, keeps choosing. Here the heart isn't framed as something fragile to protect, but as a kind of strength: something that has moved through darkness without losing its light, and that can turn experience into direction and grounded presence.

This mala is unrepeatable — only one exists with this exact arrangement of stones, meru, and pendant.

The stones here are genuine, untreated gemstones — not dyed, not heat-treated to alter their color. The mala is hand-knotted on a resistant cord built to hold up under daily wear, and the metal findings are nickel- and lead-free, so they're gentle on sensitive skin.

Natural stones and seeds are never perfectly identical. Variations in transparency, inclusions, shape, color, and surface belong to their natural origin and make this mala genuinely one of a kind.
